The Admiral Project would finally include all of the technology that had evolved over the years of chasing 'microns' and challenging technical specifications. The machine would combine exotic materials technology of Invar 36, UHM Carbonfiber and introduce our patent pending CARBINVAR technology to produce an entire metrology frame possessing a near-zero coefficient of thermal expansion. The project would review and improve on all aspects of the mechanical and electronic hardware to remove all known negative sources for contribution to the extremely small error budget allocated to meet our target accuracy in an uncontrolled environment.
The most exhaustive engineering effort would come in the form of all new High-Yield Stainless Steel Belt Drive Systems across all three axes, that would be servo-controlled in torque mode to allow for low-inertia and high stiffness with no potential for influencing the moving mass during measurement. The machine performed as expected with repeatability of measurement well into the sub-micron range and volumetric performance on a 500 mm ballbar in 20 positions at a bandwidth of 2.2 microns(86 millionths of an inch).
